Description
Olivier Charmeil is a graduate of HEC (Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales) and of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris. He began his career in the Mergers & Acquisitions department of Banque de l’Union Européenne. He joined Sanofi in 1994 where he has held various positions including Attaché to the Chairman, Jean-François Dehecq, before being appointed as VP Development Sanofi-Synthélabo International Operations where he was responsible for China and support functions.
In 2003, Olivier Charmeil was appointed Chairman and CEO of Sanofi-Synthélabo France, before taking the position of SVP Business Management and Support within the Pharmaceutical Operations. In this role, he piloted the operational integration of Sanofi-Synthélabo and Aventis. In 2006, he was appointed SVP Asia/Pacific & Japan Pharmaceutical Operations and in 2011 Executive VP Vaccines and became a member of the Executive Committee.
In 2016, he was appointed EVP & GM, General Medicines and Emerging Markets. In 2019, he was the Executive Vice President for the China & Emerging Markets GBU before being appointed in his new position in 2020.
From February to April 2026, Olivier assumed the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer during the transition period.
From September 2026, he has been appointed Strategic Projects Advisor to the CEO.
He is a member of the Board of EFPIA (European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations) and Chairman of the IBSC (International Board Steering Committee).
He is also a Board member of genOway and Virbac.
